New Makerspace Opens at Downs

Colorful room with pillows Glenn L. Downs School is the latest recipient of a grant that brings a Makerspace to American schools. Thanks to the generosity of The Heart of America & Pharmaceutical company AbbVie Inc., Downs got an innovative makeover called a Makerspace on June 6, 2018. It's a room where students have an opportunity to explore interests, use tools and materials, engineer and develop creative projects. It's basically a modern day classroom/space.

With the help of Cartwright's Building and Operations Team, volunteers with AbbVie and the Heart of America, rolled up their sleeves and created a spectacular room with computers, sewing machines, workshop stations and STEM tools. Principal Vivian Nash said it was exciting to see the work done but even more exciting to think of students actually putting the room to use. Downs students will be back in school on August 7th and administrators and teachers already have solid plans on how to build their curriculum around the Makerspace.
